Subway in Japan: Welcome

Please Do Not Run

City of Nagoya, Japan
Subway Entrance 1994
Sponsored by Nissin Steel Co.  Ltd

When William McElcheran learned that the steel company, Nissin Steel, was the sponsor of the artwork in the new subway station, he suggested they provide him with stainless steel with which he could create his subway mural. McElcheran created an added dimension to the artwork by placing polished stainless steel panels together with panels of sculpted bronze figures in relief. The mirrored finish on the steel interspersed between the sculpted bronze images, reflect people passing by, who then become part of the artwork.
